“Shadows in Paradise” statement

Are animals in zoos happy? This issue is controversial.

We often think of zoos as enjoyable places – the animals look like they are living their lives peacefully, and at the same time, zoos are valuable places in that they allow us to see and study rare animals.

Since the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), also known as the Washington Treaty, was entered into, no more wild animals are transported to zoos.
As a negative effect, however, approximately 90% of animals in the zoos have never experienced the wild lives in the case of Japanese zoos in 2017.
In this closed environment, the animals’ instincts and biology are being altered due to the repeated inbreeding.
Their long-standing biological system is on the verge of collapse. On the other hand, to solve this issue, we cannot simply say that we should not have any zoos.
We cannot deny the significant role that zoos play in our society.
Also, zoos has been playing an important role also in wildlife society.

For example, many animals currently designated as endangered species can be seen in the zoos.
Without knowing that such threatened species exist, we would not even have any opportunities to learn about their critical situation for the attempt at improvement.

Is it possible that from the animals’ perspectives, zoos are a paradise, with everything they need provided for them?
Especially now due to factors such as climate change and hunting and trophy (making killing wild animals a hobby or entertainment), wild animals are forced to survive in an increasingly hostile environment.

Alternatively, maybe animals are being forced to pay the price for the sake of our human society.
They often do not have the companionship of large herds, nor do they have freedom to roam in their vast natural habitat, especially in small zoos that still exist in many countries, including my country, Japan.

The good news is that more and more major zoos especially in the US have been improving their environments to suit each animal’s biology and to imitate the wild nature and treating them more humanely.
Yet, there are still many zoos that continue to treat animals poorly in an inhumane environment and to use them simply as tools to entertain people.

Through their eyes, expressions, screaming voices, postures, behaviors and all the other little nuance of body language, negative feelings of anger and sorrow flow through me. They look as if they are entreating of me by saying they are exhausted, angry, sad and hated. I strove to capture the unseen sides of the animals’ lives in the unique environment of the zoo.

Through this series, I am aiming to convey people the reality of the confined environment that zoo animals are currently forced to live, hoping to help betterment of such animal’s environment.
